What is Ziloo

Ziloo is one of the oldest Persian rug that is made of pure cotton. It has been woven in Meybod city of Iran for many years. This carpet is one of the most enduring floor coverings, especially in desert areas. Unlike other Iranian handmade carpets, which are woven by wool, Ziloo is completely plant-based and it is made of pure cotton. Its yarns are made of herbs, cellulose materials so it is natural completely. In Iran carpet is a general term applied for any kind of floor covering so some believed that Ziloo could be considered as a carpet. However, Ziloo, like persian kilim and jajim, is a special kind of floor covering in Iran which is totally different from carpet.

Advantages

Ziloo, one of the Iranian handicrafts, is made of pure cotton and does not cause any allergy. There is no electricity charge in Ziloo and its static electricity is nil. This quality has led to Ziloo being dubbed ‘healthy floor covering’. Ziloo doesn’t have lint, so it doesn’t produce aerosols. It is suitable for children, elders and the ones with respiratory disease. It doesn’t cause skin allergy and it has been recommended for the ones with skin allergy. These persian handmade carpets are guaranteed to last a really long time and make you healthier. Ziloo is recyclable so after many years of using Ziloo, when it is rotten, it can be buried as fertilizer because of its cellulosic yarns.

Ziloo City

Located in the heart of the desert, Meybod city can be found sixty kilometers north of Yazd Province of Iran. It is an ancient city long known for its Persian Pottery and Persian Ziloo. In 2018 it was announced that, according to the vote of the World Handicrafts Council, Meybod was registered as the global city for ziloo weaving. At present, there are more than 1,000 ziloo weavers engaged in 200 workshops in Meybod. The Ziloo weavers produce a variety of Ziloo items like floor covering, sofa covering, car-seat cover, wall hanging and prayer mat. Due to the simplicity of this persian handmade carpet, it is used as a cheap persian rug to cover subordinate areas of a mosque.

Ziloo History

Ziloo is one of the oldest handicrafts of Meybod city. The history of this persian carpet dates back to centuries before Islam. In his travelogue, Naser-khosro, the famous Iranian poet, mentions the existence of about 500 workshops of Ziloo making only in the city of Toon which is in East Iran. In the first persian book of geography, persian ziloo is recorded as one of the most important floor coverings in mosques in Iran for 4 centuries after the rise of Islam. This Iranian carpet is made of cotton threads also is very simple in appearance. It reflects the rich culture and thought of the people making it.

Ziloo Weaving

The raw material of Ziloo is from cotton. Cotton yarn is produced with the help of spinning wheels. Then the colors which had a plant origin are added to them to produce wonderful scenery for the viewer. These colors are sun resistance. The quality of double sidedness of Ziloo products and the different colors of each side make it possible to use these persian carpets with different purposes. Ziloo, in bigger sizes, are mostly used in mosques and smaller sizes are used in houses. Almost all the existing masterpieces of Ziloo art come from Meybod city in Iran.
